Re: Ottawa’s silliest campaign promise, Sept. 25.
While I agree that candidates’ pledges to only serve two terms may be silly, they are nonetheless promises that must be kept.
When a councillor announces, as Bob Monette did, that they would not run again after the end of their second mandate, potential candidates might have stayed home, keeping their powder dry rather than running against an incumbent. Those poor candidates then find out four years later that it was all a bluff, in effect a broken promise. A bit like Lucy holding the football for Charlie Brown, always promising to not pull the ball away next time.
We should therefore insist that those sorts of pledges, no matter how silly, be kept.
