An Orléans man jumped from his bedroom window Wednesday afternoon to escape a fire raging in his two-storey home.
The man, in his 20s, and his sister, who was at work when the fire broke out, are both without a home.
Ottawa Fire Services estimates the fire caused $300,000 in damage to the house at 1292 Dussere St. and said it is likely a total loss.
The owner called firefighters around 4:30 p.m., and by just after 5:30 p.m. the blaze was under control. He told firefighters he’d been sleeping and woke up to smoke clogging his bedroom. He jumped from a window onto the roof of his garage before making it safely to ground.
The man was treated for minor cuts and scrapes, and taken to hospital as a precaution.
Fire Services said the fire likely started in the kitchen before spreading throughout the main level and then to the second floor.
The brother and sister, as well as two pets, are being helped by the Ottawa Salvation Army and the Red Cross victims’ assistance team.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
