Letter: Honour sports greats throughout TD Place

Re: Lansdowne Park re-launch nears, on time and ‘tracking well’, July 3.

It’s too bad that the magnificent new TD Place has had to have a name change which rescinds the honour to the respected “Professor” Frank Clair, but the realities of modern commerce and economy cannot be ignored. If that’s the price we have to pay for maintaining first-class sports stadiums, it certainly beats having to tap taxpayers’ pockets.

May I suggest though, that there is a way for us to satisfy both our financial needs and the wish to recognize the accomplishments of past sports heroes, by adopting the practice of world-famous stadiums like the headquarters of cricket in London, U.K., Lord’s Cricket Club. For instance, why not designate the north stand “The Frank Clair Stand”; the south stand the “Russ Jackson Stand”; the end bleachers, respectively the “Margene Adkins” and the “Tony Gabriel” bleachers; and the main gate, the “Ron Stewart” gate … you get the idea.

Although you wouldn’t want to push it too far, there are other places (like dressing rooms) that could honour other great players of the past like Vic Washington and Kenny Lehmann.

Charles Levy, Kanata
