Letter: Memories of LeBreton landmarks

Re: NCC eyeing major new capital landmark on LeBreton Flats, Sept. 12.

Hurrah for the National Capital Commission for finally seeking ideas to develop the long-empty LeBreton Flats.

As a youngster growing up in my grandfather’s home, I have vivid memories of some of the landmarks. I also remember the angst felt by my grandfather upon learning of the expropriation of his home, and how devastated he was at the thought of seeing his home demolished to make way for the government’s grandiose ideas for the redevelopment of the Flats.

Perhaps Andrew King’s vision of recreating an 1800-early 1900 streetscape could include the Victoria Foundry, Bellehumeur’s Barber Shop and some semblance of my grandfather’s home, replete with a coal chute, a milk cubby hole, an ice house and a horse barn. After some 50 years, he would be happy to see that there had been a purpose to his loss through expropriation.
