A company that owns high-rise apartment rental units has been fined $75,000 for multiple Fire Code violations after a 2013 fire led to an investigation into its properties.
Saickley Enterprises Ltd. pleaded guilty to several counts listed under the Fire Protection and Prevention Act. Eight defendants, representing related or companion companies and 16 Ottawa buildings, were found guilty of a 120 convictions after entering their pleas on July 24.
The company first came to Ottawa Fire Services’ attention after a fire broke out at a building on March 12, 2013.
After the fire at 371 Gilmour St. was extinguished, investigators discovered numerous violations, prompting inspections of other related Ottawa buildings, which are mostly residential high rises, the fire department said in a news release.
The total includes a victim fine surcharge amounting to $15,000, or 25 per cent of the $60,000 fine.
Ottawa Fire Services said building owners should remember they are responsible for the maintenance of fire safety at their buildings, and regularly reviewing a fire safety plan is a good way to stay on top of it.
“(Ottawa Fire Services) also encourages residents to file complaints if they feel that there are any fire safety issues in their buildings,” said Thursday’s release.
