“The Great Black North” to launch Wednesday in Ottawa

The first national anthology of poetry by African Canadians will be launched Wednesday, Feb. 20 in Ottawa.

The anthology, titled The Great Black North: Contemporary African Canadian Poetry, includes the work of several dozen poets from coast to coast, with Ottawa second only to Toronto among cities represented. The Ottawa poets are on the list include John Akpata, Anthony Bansfield, Seble Samuel and at least six others.

The Great Black North is a contemporary remix of the story of Black Canada . . . told through the intertwining tapestry of poetic forms found on the page and stage,” a release says.

One of the editors, Kevan “Scruffmouth” Cameron of B.C., will be among poets performing during the Ottawa launch, which begins at 6:30 p.m. (doors 6 p.m.), Feb. 20 at Pressed Café, 750 Gladstone.
