Josh Silburt, who died in 1991, was a political cartoonist, artist and activist, and he left behind a large body of work. Silburt’s son, Allan, lives in Ottawa and has written A Colourful Life, a book about his father’s work.

The newspaper cartoons are sardonic glimpses into 20th-century history. The landscapes are bright, rustic views of the Canadian shield, like cartoon backgrounds if painted by the Group of Seven.

Examples of Silburt the elder’s pointed cartoons and landscapes are at Cube Gallery (1285 Wellington) to Feb. 17.
