Re: It’s time for a central library discussion, July 5
I am glad to read that we are reconsidering the need for a new central public library in Ottawa.
To make this happen, we should think outside the box, i.e., the current facility at Laurier and Metcalfe. I would suggest that land at Bayview Yards (Bayview and Albert) is prime location for the new library. There are several good reasons. Most importantly, the land is owned by the city; thus, no acquisition cost. Bayview Yards is where Confederation Line would meet O-Train, making the new library accessible by public transit. The development of the Innovation Centre at the same site presents synergies to promote entrepreneurship, creativity, culture and learning. Lastly, the development of the library at Bayview Yards would not only rejuvenate Mechanicsville, but could also spark a more inspiring development of LeBreton Flats.
All of this would help redevelop an under utilized part of our city which was once bustling with commercial and communal activity.
