Letter: Cyclists must respect the rules of the road, too

Re: Ottawa is still not safe enough for cyclists, June 30.

From my experience, the most important part of Theresa Wallace’s opinion piece was the paragraph beginning: “But getting more cyclists on our roads will be a disaster if those cyclists ride poorly.”

I witnessed a group of 12 cyclists in cycling gear, who appeared to be part of a cycling club, approach a fourway stop. The lead cyclist looked both ways and with no oncoming traffic, went through the stop sign without stopping, and the 11 followed in like manner.

Not three minutes later a similar group of eight cyclists did the same. In another incident, I was stopped at a traffic light on Riverside Drive when a cyclist approached the light, looked to the left (it was the side street entering the light) and proceeded through the red light.

Traffic enforcement should be as strict for cyclists as it is for vehicles. If and when cyclists respect the rules of the road, perhaps more motorists will respect them.

Joe Legari, Ottawa
