Yes, it draws on Chehkov but no, you don’t have to know his work to get a bang out of Christopher Durang’s absurdist comedy Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike at The Gladstone until June 5. Look for angst, gloomy prognostications, a boy-toy and some well-known Ottawa performers, Mary Ellis and Beverley Wolfe among them, in Durang’s tale of three siblings, an old farmhouse and the narrowing of possibilities. The music of Prince is in the spotlight at the Rainbow Bistro on Saturday, May 21, thanks to some of Ottawa’s finest musicians. The Split’s creative core, brothers Matthew and Curtis Chaffey, will be joined by an all-star band and a few special guests as they recreate the Purple One’s funkiest tunes. Tickets are $10 advance, $15 at the door. The music starts around 10 p.m. Bring your dancing shoes.

Ottawa-based Cuban piano powerhouse Miguel De Armas has been making new musical friends with his Friday night residency at the Ironstone Grill in the Marshes Golf Club in Kanata. This Friday he joins forces with trombonist Mark Ferguson and bassist Normand Glaude.
