Arts best bets, Feb. 11 to 17

Rock Lynn Saxberg

Ottawa’s indie rockers Hilotrons and the folk-rock duo Whitehorse will brave the expected cold temperatures this weekend to round out Winterlude’s Sub Zero concert series. Keyboardist Mike Dubue brings his band, Hilotrons, to the outdoor Crystal Garden stage at Confederation Park on Feb. 12, while Juno nominees Whitehorse play there on Feb. 13. Both concerts start at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free. DJs will keep the music going after the performances.

The Canadian Film Institute presents its sixth Bright Nights Baltic-Nordic Film Festival from Feb. 12 until Feb. 21 at Carleton University’s River Building Theatre (1125 Colonel By Dr.). The festival features films from eight countries: Estonia, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway and Sweden. All films are Ottawa premieres. Three of the films were screened at the  Cannes Film Festival (Rams, Louder Than Bombs and Ingrid Bergman: In Her Own Words).The festival opens with the Danish film The Shooter. As in past years, a special guest director will be present, and this year it’s Helga Merits from Estonia on Valentine’s Day at 4 p.m.  Tickets and information: cfi-icf.ca/brightnights

Alexander Shelley conducts the National Arts Centre Orchestra, soloists and choir tonight in a concert featuring two hauntingly beautiful works by Brahms: Nänie and A German Requiem. Also included is Schumann’s Piano Concerto, with pianist Jan Lisiecki as soloist.  Tickets from $25. 1-888-991-2787. What’s love got to do with it? A lot of mixed emotions, as seen in the works in a new exhibition in time for Valentine’s Day. The show, up Feb. 12 to 28, will reflect “passion, desire, polarities, self-display, grief, romance, or perhaps love’s impending doom?” There’ll be art by Sharon Van Starkenburg, Patti Normand, Alex Chowaniec, Brandon McVittie and others. 358 Richmond Rd., next to MEC. Jazz Peter Hum

Guitarist Roddy Ellias kicks of a new Saturday night jazz series on Feb. 13 from 7 to 10 p.m. at Caveau Mediterranean (1838 Bank St.). He’s to inaugurate the series by playing duets with trombonist Mark Ferguson, and the following Saturdays will see him paired with saxophonist Petr Cancura (Feb. 20), bassist John Geggie (Feb. 27) and vocalist Megan Jerome (March 5).
