Windmill Development Group and Dream Unlimited Corp.’s ambitious Zibi project on the former Domtar lands broke ground Thursday to officially begin construction.

The first building to go up in the $1.5-billion, ultra-green, mixed-use project will be the six-storey condo O on the Gatineau shoreline. Featuring 66 units, it launched in the spring and is just over half sold. Remaining units start at $220,000 for a 500-square-foot studio.

As O is being built, about 100,000 square feet of existing buildings will be refurbished to provide a commercial/retail presence when the condo is complete in late 2017.

A second phase of O, called O2, will see another 75 units released in the spring.

Phase 1 of the Gatineau portion of Zibi by Windmill Development Group and partner Dream Unlimited Corp. is a pair six-storey condo buildings called O and O2.

Over the next 15 years, the 37-acre parcel of land straddling the Ottawa River at the Chaudière Falls will be transformed into a pedestrian-oriented community featuring waterfront parks and open spaces, a blend of commercial, retail and 1,200 residential properties, a hotel, and a network of cycling paths.
