A minor earthquake near Pembroke on Tuesday evening was heard but not seen by some residents, and felt as far away as Killaloe and Barry’s Bay.
The quake was registered on the Natural Resources Canada website as having a magnitude of 3.6 and was centred seven kilometres west southwest of Pembroke.
The weekly Valley Gazette newspaper in Barry’s Bay reported that it was felt during the council meeting in Killaloe, and there were reports online that it was felt in by some people in nearby Barry’s Bay but only heard as a low rumble in other parts of the village and the Madawaska Valley.
Earthquakes in the Ottawa Valley region are common but are generally not of sufficient magnitude to be felt or cause damage. However on June 23, 2010, a magnitude 5.0 earthquake near Buckingham, Que., shook Ottawa for nearly 30 seconds, causing minor damage in the national capital, and damaging buildings and a bridge in west Quebec.
It was described at the time as the most powerful in the region in 65 years.
