A six-week-old baby who was found unconscious in a Thurso home on Wednesday has died in hospital, Sûreté du Quebec Sgt. Ann Mathieu confirmed on Friday.
Police responded to a call Wednesday to a home where an infant was found unconscious, with signs similar to shaken baby syndrome.
The infant — a baby girl, according to an off-duty paramedic who lives next door and who helped treat the infant while still at the home — was taken to a hospital in Gatineau, and then transferred to Ottawa, where police said the baby was in critical condition before dying.
Police have laid a charge of aggravated assault against the 25-year-old father. The accused appeared in court Thursday afternoon and was remanded to July 20 for a bail hearing.
The court imposed a publication ban on the man’s name to protect the identity of the child.
The investigation continues, and an autopsy is scheduled for early next week.
