A young man is dead, the victim of a stairwell stabbing in an east-side apartment complex.
The young man — thought to be in his late teens — suffered multiple stab wounds to his chest in the attack late Tuesday afternoon in the stairwell of the 15-storey highrise at 2020 Sutton Place on Jasmine Crescent, off Ogilvie Road.
“I lost him … my only son,” a tearful woman said as she was being escorted away from the scene by police.
A man accompanying the woman said, “I tried to give him CPR, (but) he was dead.”
Another man, who would identify himself only as a resident of the same building, said the victim “didn’t make it out of the building.” He described the victim, who lived in the complex with his family, as a “great kid” who had recently graduated from high school.
Police, who received a 911 call about the stabbing, confirmed the victim was without vital signs when paramedics took him hospital. He was declared dead shortly after the 5 p.m. assault, becoming the city’s second homicide of the year.
“A young adult was stabbed in the stairwell … inside the building,” said Det. Chris Benson, who added that the circumstances surrounding the stabbing were unknown.
Police were withholding the name of the victim and his age, even though his relatives had been notified.
Investigators continued to canvas building tenants into the evening hours, and late Tuesday said they were still looking for a suspect or suspects. They noted that the building is secure-access only and accessible only to residents.
Police appealed for any witnesses who may have seen anything to contact at the major crime office at 613 236 1222, ext. 5493.
