Admitting he was a little disillusioned with his experience at Penn State as a freshman, Michael O’Connor has talked for the first time about why he has chosen to attend the University of British Columbia. The Ottawa native says he felt he would get the best of both the academic and athletic worlds.

“It was a win-win,” he said. The 19-year-old also says his ultimate goal is still to be a pro quarterback.

“I have just chosen a different route. I have faced challenges all my life, like moving away from home after 10th grade.

“It’s just another challenge. I can’t look at it and say there hasn’t been a Canadian quarterback to play in the CFL in years, or rarely in the NFL. I just have to stay focused on what I can do every day to get better and whatever happens I will be happy.”

The 6-5 O’Connor will enter UBC’s Sauder School of Business in the fall but “I’d say I like football more (than school),” he told reporters in Vancouver this past week
