Ottawa's brief fling with spring comes to chilly halt — for now

It was brief, and it was welcome, but after three days of above-freezing temperatures — with the added bonus of sunshine — the nation’s capital was heading back into sub-zero territory Wednesday night, according to Environment Canada.

It’s the kind of news that would be greeted with a shrug were it not for the fact that there had not been a day of above-freezing weather since Jan. 23 when the mercury soared to — wait for it — 0.1 C.

There was not a single day above freezing in February, when the average daytime temperature was -10.9.

But after reaching a high of 8.3 on Wednesday, and as snowbanks began to shrink, potholes sprouted and “dog muffins” began to appear, the forecast took a turn for the more seasonal, with Wednesday night’s low forecast to plunge to -11 and Thursday’s high rising to a brisk -2.

Environment Canada said temperatures were expected to moderate heading into the weekend, climbing to -1 degree on Friday and 3 on Saturday, with a 60 per cent chance of rain that could help wash away a few layers of snow before turning to a possible mixture of rain and snow with a high of -1 on Sunday. Expect a high of 6 on Monday.
