The American photographer Randal Levenson spent a decade touring the continent with circus sideshows, and in 1982 his photographs were published as the book In Search of the Monkey Girl. It is a panoply of “freaks,” as the performers were called back in the less-enlightened age.
Levenson brings the portraits to La Petite Mort Gallery (306 Cumberland) for an exhibition from Friday, June 6 to June 29. See the “world’s smallest mom,” the “carnie stripper,” the “Human Blockhead” and other sideshow performers among the tents and trailers of their mobile community.
Vernissage is 7 to 9 p.m., June 6. Levenson, who has taught at the University of Ottawa, will speak about his work in the gallery at 5 p.m. on June 7.
