Frigid temperatures were not enough to stop Lee Farrell from getting what he wanted, even though it meant camping out in the cold for more than 24 hours.
The Kanata man was determined to be first in line at the Cardel Homes sales centre at Richardson Ridge to get the lot he wanted for a new home. So at 7:45 a.m. on Friday, in –23 C weather, he bundled up in thermal clothes, gathered heating packs and a survival blanket and got set for a chilly wait.
“Seems like a crazy thing, I know, but hey, we’ve got one shot at the lot we want, might as well go all in,” he said in an email just after arriving. He and his wife — who had “voluntold” him for the campout — have been looking in the area for the past three years, waiting for a decent-sized lot in a new development.
Some 28 hours later, he got what he wanted, a pie-shaped corner lot in Phase 3 of the development, which is off Terry Fox Drive just north of the Queensway.
“The wait wasn’t too bad,” Lee said Monday morning, having had time to warm up. “I did have friends stop by a couple of times so I could get a break.”
He was eventually joined by a few others in line, although not until early Saturday morning. In all, Cardel ended the weekend with 11 of the 17 new lots reserved.
