Ottawa breaks 44-year weather record

The temperature in Ottawa soared Monday, breaking a record high that had stood for 44 years.

Environment Canada recorded a high of 30.4 C, Monday afternoon, edging by a fraction of a degree the previous record of 30.0 C set in 1970.

With the heat came a risk of thunderstorms and rain showers Monday night.

The temperature should moderate for the remainder of the week, with Environment Canada forecasting highs back in the mid- to low-20s until Friday, when the daytime high climbs back to 28 C.

The normal high for June 2 is 23 C.

For the record, the record low for the day was 3.8 C in 1986.

Tim Hortons Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival (THODBF) received six dragon boats at Mooney's Bay on Monday, June 2 at the old Mooney's Bay Marina site for team practices in preparation for the THODBF on June 19 to 22, 2014. There will be 16 boats in the fleet for the event.
