The eastbound lanes of Innes Road were closed at Anderson Road Friday evening due to a serious motor vehicle collision at that intersection, Ottawa police said.
The collision occurred just before 5 p.m.
Paramedics on scene said two patients — an elderly couple — were taken to The Ottawa Hospital’s trauma centre at the Civic campus in serious condition. They were in a sedan that was struck on its passenger side by a pickup truck, paramedics said.
Fire crews on scene had to remove a door of the vehicle to free one of the patients. Paramedics said “heavy extrication” was needed to remove one of the vehicle’s occupants.
Police are asking motorists to avoid the area and take an alternate route. Traffic was being redirected onto Anderson Road southbound.
Police are investigating the collision.
