Letter: Snow, you say? Time to call in the army!

Re: Snow blankets Toronto while Ottawa freezes, Feb. 2.

Being in a family of Ottawa Senators fans, I usually enjoy a good excuse to poke fun at Toronto (“Why is the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto? Because it’s the only way the Leafs fans will ever get to see the Stanley Cup.”) I would normally chuckle at the “world-class” city’s inability to deal with a little snow.

After seeing how Ottawa was unable to cope with just nine centimetres of snow on Jan. 29, I’m not sure I can enjoy that laugh in good conscience.

I was heading to the Senators game in Kanata that night and decided to be a model citizen and take the OC Transpo bus from downtown (the fact that our hockey complex is in Kanata is another reason we cannot be smug).

The first bus, nearly an hour late arriving at the Rideau Centre and passed us by because it was already full.

The second bus, also close to an hour late, only had room for half of us, leaving eager children and senior citizens waiting in the cold conditions wondering if they would ever get to see the game.

If our city cannot figure out how to transport hockey fans on a typical winter day with a bit of snow, maybe we need to bring in the army to help out too.

Elizabeth Grace, Ottawa
