John Baird will not be missed
Re: John Baird resigns: Complete coverage, Feb. 4.
John Baird has done little for his constituents at the local level or Canadians at the national level. As minister of transportation, what benefits did the travelling public see from his leadership? Minor changes but no protections as there are available in the United States.
Minister of the environment? Does one really have to say anything about Baird‘s and the Conservative party legacy?
Minister of foreign affairs? He is no diplomat and has pushed an agenda that most Canadians find embarrassing but serves the Conservative base. He is also no statesman.
Constituents who were Nortel pensioners were left with no support but GM and other auto firms received billions of dollars.

Huge loss to political scene
This is a huge loss to Ottawa, Canada and especially the Conservative government. John Baird has always worked for the Ottawa area and was the closest confidant to Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
He is recognized around the world for his willingness to tackle even the most delicate political subjects head on. He has been a staunch supporter of Israel, while condemning terrorist organizations. He was the first senior politician to visit Ukraine during the current crisis and has constantly condemned Russian aggression in that country.
He spoke out against the United Nations for what he saw as unwarranted criticism of Canada. He was one of the strongest and most recognizable foreign affairs ministers in recent time.
Baird was certainly respected by colleagues and opposition parties alike and his leaving is a huge loss to Canada’s political scene.
