Ottawa fire crews have put out a two-alarm fire that had engulfed an apartment unit in a Little Italy highrise Friday evening, causing about $200,000 damage, officials said.

At just before 5 p.m., Ottawa Fire Services says it received reports of smoke coming from the 11th floor at 360 Bell St. South.

Upon arrival, crews reported that the fire in unit 1104 was “fully involved” and had spread to the hallway.

Paramedics took three patients to hospital for smoke inhalation, according to Ottawa fire services, and about 20 of the building’s residents have been displaced. Ottawa Victims Services, Hydro Ottawa and Enbridge were also on the scene.

Bell Street South between Carling Avenue and Plymouth Street, which were closed, were reopened just after 7 p.m., although firefighters were still at the building doing salvage work.
