I’m co-hosting a show on CKCU FM radio on Thursday morning, and the host, Ryan Bresee, told me that I get to program the entire 2.5 hours of music.
“What will it be?” asked Bresee, whose eclectic show is appropriately titled Whatever’s Cool With Me.
I didn’t have to think long about a theme. “It’ll be 100 per cent local,” I told him a while back. “All Ottawa music, all the time.”
The theme is no sop to local musicians, about whom I often write for the Citizen, and some of whom I know personally. I chose local because Ottawa is bursting with great music of all kinds, and I’m often sad that so many people have not yet recognized that fact.
Bring at least 30 songs, Bresee said. I had no problem finding enough songs, each of which fits only two criteria — they’re original tracks by local musicians, and they’re among my personal favourites from the past few years.
The only problem I had was whittling down the list to get it to fit into the air time available. It’s possible that a few songs might not make it to air if time runs out, but my tentative playlist is on the right of this post. Click on the thumbnail to see a larger, more readable photo.
Whatever’s Cool With Me is Thursdays 9:30 a.m. to noon, on CKCU-FM at 93.1 FM. Click here to listen live. Join us.
