If you had ever imagined pulling off a crime then making a slick getaway in a taxi cab, the latest Ottawa police arrest may curb your ambition.

On Monday, police tracked a bank robbery suspect to a Merivale Road residence after a witness spotted a man fleeing a bank holdup at a branch on Bank Street in the Sunnyside area.

It was the second time in six days the branch had been hit. And police believe the Sunnyside robberies were committed by the same person who robbed a bank Dec. 22 on Bank Street in the Glebe.

In each case, a suspect approached a teller and demanded money. The suspect then fled with an undisclosed amounts of cash. No weapon was seen during the robberies and there were no injuries reported.

Police said a witness spotted the suspect climbing into a cab after the Monday holdup and the cab company was able to provide an address.

Police have laid a number of robbery and weapon-related offences against Trevor Sparling, 41, of Ottawa.

Investigators say they found cash and an imitation handgun in the Merivale Road residence.

The charges against him have not been tested in court. He was to appear in court Wednesday.

Ottawa taxis have been at the centre of action in recent days. The victims in two separate shootings Monday each took a cab to hospital after they were wounded.
