Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Ottawa, with rain, thunderstorms, very mild temperatures and strong winds forecast over the next few days.

The outlook for Christmas Eve includes periods of rain, patchy fog, a few thunderstorms and mild temperatures. Strong and gusty winds are expected to develop in the evening and continue through Christmas Day, bringing drier air and temperatures closer to normal.

An intensifying weather system from the American south will spread rain across much of Southern Ontario beginning Tuesday night, with areas of fog expected. Rain and fog are expected for much of the day on Christmas Eve, with the possibility of a few thunderstorms in the afternoon. Temperatures will again be mild, and a few new daily high temperature records may be set, according to the agency.

The rain, fog and thunderstorms will come to an end during the evening and overnight on Christmas Eve, but strong and gusty winds are likely.

On Christmas Day, the strong winds will persist, but are expected to abate as the weather system moves off to the northeast. Temperatures will be closer to seasonal, with some scattered wet snow flurries.

Environment Canada’s latest forecasts and alerts are available at www.weatheroffice.gc.ca.
