Environment Canada issued a freezing rain warning for the Ottawa area early Tuesday morning.
The weather office says surfaces such as roads and walkways may become icy and slippery this morning, and to take extra care when walking or driving.
Operations were reported to be normal at the Ottawa airport, but travellers were advised to double-check departure times for possible delays.
The freezing rain should persist for a few hours today before tapering off and turning into rain late this morning or early this afternoon, Environment Canada said.
This morning’s freezing rain marks the start of some mild holiday weather across Eastern and Southern Ontario.
In Ottawa, temperatures are forecast to reach a high of 5 C on Wednesday and 3 C on Thursday.
In some areas of the province, mild temperatures, rain, fog, and maybe even a few thunderstorms are expected on Christmas Eve, Environment Canada said in a special weather statement.
In many areas, temperatures could reach the high single digits or low teens. A few high temperature records for the day may be broken.
