Ottawa firefighters made quick work of a Rockcliffe Park house fire Monday evening.
Shortly after 5:30 p.m., fire crews responded to a report of house fire on Howick Street, where they found a two-storey home under renovation in flames. A second alarm was sounded.
With no drywall separating the rooms, the fire spread rapidly until it reached the roof, forcing firefighters to withdraw from the building and fight the blaze defensively from the outside.
However, within 2o minutes of their arrival, they had extinguished most of the fire on the main floor, although flames were still visible in the upper portions of the house.
The fire was declared under control by 6:30 p.m., although crews would remain on site for much of the evening.
There were no reports of injuries. Damage to the structure was estimated at $400,000, and an Ottawa Fire Services investigator was summoned to determine the cause.
Police closed Mariposa Avenue at Howick Street and Lisgar Road at Maple Lane to traffic.
