Two people had to be rescued from a balcony by firefighters and four have been displaced after a kitchen fire broke out in a Russell Road apartment building early Sunday.

At about 1 a.m., Ottawa Fire received a report of heavy smoke on the second floor and two people on the balcony of a second-floor unit at 1825 Russell Rd.

When firefighters arrived, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the second floor, and rescued the two people from the balcony.

Paramedics treated a 72-year-old man for cardiac chest pain unrelated to the original call, and assessed four others: two men and two women. All “refused transport to hospital,” paramedics said.

The Ottawa Paramedic Treatment Rehab Unit  and OC Transpo buses provided warmth and shelter to residents who were evacuated from the six-storey building.

The fire was under control by 1:13 a.m.

Victim Services have been called to help the four adults displaced: two from the unit where the fire originated, and two from the unit above.

Damages are estimated at $50,000 to the unit and $25,000 to the building.

Ottawa police are investigating. The Ottawa Fire Service Fire Inspector is on location as well.
