Minto is taking a novel approach when it comes to naming an upcoming community in Stittsville: It’s asking the public for help.
The longtime builder is encouraging residents to “be a part of Stittsville history,” according to its website, and enter a contest to propose a name for the 60 acres of land on Hazeldean Road just east of Carp Road.
“Minto had not built in Stittsville before so we thought it would be great to get to know our neighbours and have them contribute by naming their new community,” sales and marketing manager Marlene Borsboom says in an email. “Participants are encouraged to provide notes on how or why they came up with their name submission so we are getting great insight into Stittsville.”
It’s the first time the company, which builds in Ottawa, Toronto and Florida, has taken this approach and it has received at least 30 submissions so far. It’s also believed to be a first for the city, says Patrick Meeds of industry analyst PMA Brethour Realty.
Typically, Minto will look at various indicators to come up with a community name, such as an area’s history, topography, indigenous plants, what other builders in the area have used, or even a feeling they want to associate with the project.
This new master-planned community will feature about 450 singles and towns and is expected to launch in either late 2015 or early 2016.
The contest is open until Jan. 11.
