Sixteen hockey players were sent to hospital early Sunday after they appeared to suffer carbon monoxide poisoning.

The players went to the Queensway-Carleton Hospital complaining of feeling ill after spending several hours earlier in the evening at the Complete Hockey Development Centre on Iber Road in Stittsville, according to the Ottawa fire department. The hockey rink had been hosting a three-on-three Movember fundraiser, according to its Facebook page.

Ottawa fire spokesman Marc Messier said the hospital called the fire department just before 2 a.m. to report that the players were ill. Firefighters went to the rink and tested for carbon monoxide but were unable to get any readings. Messier said it was possible the odourless and colourless gas may have already been vented from the building.

Firefighters said they left it in the hands of the maintenance staff.

A staff member at the Complete Hockey Development Centre declined to comment on Sunday night.
