Kristy Gordon is such a tremendous painter of portraits that it’s difficult to imagine she continues to improve, but there is the evidence in her new exhibition, Flux, at Cube Gallery (1285 Wellington West).
The former Ottawa resident’s latest portraits of her life in New York City are powerful meditations on identity and vulnerability — nudes of men and women posed with impassioned plainness in front of graffitied walls, or as temporary presences within the architecture of New York.
Then there’s the self-portrait of the artist falling, arms out, her expression a mix of alarm and resignation, as if she knows the truth of the painting’s title, This Too Shall Pass. Do not let Flux pass without seeing it before it ends Nov. 30.
