Re: Hillcrest High teacher stored arsenal at school, hearing told, Oct. 23.

I had the pleasure of having Laird Evans as a teacher, mentor and friend all throughout high school from 2000 to 2003. His commitment to his students went above and beyond his “job description.” He may not have always agreed with everyone or the politics that went on in the halls of the school, but he was real. He went to the beat of his own drum and I highly respect that in an age where we teach our kids to be leaders and follow their heart and values.

There is no question that Mr. Evans should not have had guns in school. Fair enough. He made a mistake, but should not be painted as a bad man. Many of the props that were brought into the school came before the Columbine, Colo., shootings and before school violence became so prevalent. He had been bringing props into the school for decades to re-create the spectacular sets and magical productions that appeared on the stage at Hillcrest High School.

This teacher never intended to cause harm, but rather to educate and give his students the best possible education and imagination that we all lack in this world today. He is a great man and was a great teacher. People need to remember that this is a man’s reputation, health and livelihood. As Robin Williams once said: “You’re only given a little spark of madness. You mustn’t lose it.”

You’re forever in my heart and thoughts, Mr. Evans — you’re one of a kind. Your students and friends are rooting for you!
