Earlier Friday, firefighters needed to cut two people out of a vehicle early this morning after a “high-speed” one-vehicle collision left a young man in critical condition.

At around 2:40 a.m. a vehicle crashed into a bridge support on Merivale Road near Colonnade Road. By 3:05 a.m., firefighters had cut both patients out of the “extensively damaged” vehicle.

A 24-year-old man was rushed to hospital in critical condition. Paramedics say he suffered significant head and chest injuries and was unconscious. His companion, a 20-year-old man, was in serious, but stable condition.

Ottawa police are investigation the incident.

Merivale Road between Colonnade Road and Roydon Place is expected to remain closed until about noon.

Motorists are advised to take an alternative route this morning.
