A young man was fined and lost his driver’s licence for several months after speeding past a Gatineau police officer at more than three times the posted limit.
Police said the officer registered the vehicle going over 160 km/h around 3:30 a.m. Sunday on Fournier Boulevard near Lambert Street in Gatineau. The limit on that road is 50 km/h, police said.
The officer followed the car, which had Ontario licence plates and held four occupants, but was not able to catch up until it had crossed to Ottawa. The car was stopped on King Edward Avenue.
The driver, who is in his 20s, was charged with impaired driving and issued a fine of $1,640 and 24 demerit points, leading to a three-month suspension of his licence.
Police did not name the man charged but said more details will be available after a full report is complete.
